The Indian Institute of Packaging was established as a society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 by the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India along with leading packaging and allied industries on 14 May, 1966 with its Head Office and principal laboratories at Mumbai.
The objectives of the Institute were inter alia to promote the export market by way of innovative packaging design and development and also to upgrade the packaging standards at National level. Keeping in view of the objectives, the Institute started various activities such as testing of packaging materials and packages, training and education, research and development as well as consultancy services related to packaging.
The Institute is dedicated to serve the Nation and the industry to achieve excellence in packaging. The facilities and services offered by the Institute are aimed at making existing modes of packaging perform better and developing new packaging to meet the demands of present and new markets. The diversified activities of the Institute encompass the entire spectrum of the packaging including Research, Development, Education, Training, Testing, Information, Exhibition, Design, Publication, Library and Data Base Services. The Institute has Regional Offices at Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru & Lucknow.
The Institute is also affiliated to prestigious international apex bodies in packaging i.e. Asian Packaging Federation (APF) and World Packaging Organization (WPO) and founder and Governing Body Member. In addition, the Institute is also the member of The Packaging Society (AIPIA), UK; Institute of Packaging Professionals, (IOPP) International Association of Packaging Research Institutes (IAPRI); School of Packaging, Michigan State University and TAPPI, USA.
